Corking: the speed differential that shapes everything
Corking is a sudden loss of vertical speed relative to the flyers around you. It is the single hazard that most shapes how freefly is taught, and the reason cork-proofing comes before any group jump.

Almost every rule in freefly traces back to one physical fact: where you break off, why you learn back-fly first, why you keep out of the column above another jumper, why groups stay small until people are ready. When a vertical flyer loses control, they slow down, fast, and everyone above them keeps falling at full speed.
What corking actually is
A head-up flyer sits in the air somewhere around 220–260 km/h. A head-down flyer is faster still. A belly flyer falls at roughly 190 km/h. Corking is what happens when a vertical flyer reverts, suddenly and involuntarily, to a flatter and slower position: a sit that falls out to the back, or a head-down that loses its line and flattens.
Australian safety columns were describing it in these terms as early as 2009: “a sudden reversion to a flat position and loss of vertical speed,” with the warning that freefly collisions can be fatal, or can injure a jumper badly enough that they cannot deploy.
The number that matters is the differential. USPA’s guidance puts a typical vertical-to-belly cork at roughly 280 km/h down to 190 km/h. A flyer directly above a corking jumper closes that gap at around 90 km/h, with very little time to react.
Why it shapes the whole discipline
A contact at that closing speed carries far more energy than anything in belly flying. That is why the recovery position is trained as a reflex, and it explains several habits that can otherwise look arbitrary:
- Back-fly comes first because it is the recovery position for both head-up and head-down. Before you learn to go fast, you learn to fail safely.
- You cork-proof before you fly relative. A flyer who cannot reliably catch a fallout has no business closing on another person at vertical speed.
- You stay out of the column directly above or below another vertical flyer on approach. Assigned lanes exist so that when someone corks, nobody is overhead.
- Breakoff and deployment discipline keep the sky clearing, rather than filling, as speeds change at the end of the jump.
What it means for training
The corking hazard is why this curriculum insists on competence over jump numbers, and why the recovery position is trained to a reflex standard: rehearsed on the ground eyes-open and eyes-closed, then executed on any loss of control before re-approaching. It is also why a stable back-fly with a genuinely wide speed range counts as a real foundation.
The wider your recovery envelope, the more of the sky you can fall through safely when something goes wrong.
